Saving Web Pages

Saving Single Page

  1. Display the Web page you wish to save in your browser.

  2. Click the SAVE button on SurfSaver toolbar.

You The Save dialog appears.

  1. Modify the title for the page, add keywords, and add notes as needed.
  1. Choose SAVE to save the Web page (or multiple pages).

Repeat the Save process for each page you wish to save.

Note:
You can save all your Web pages in a single cabinet, or you can create multiple cabinets and group pages in different folders. For example, if you were collecting competitive product information, you could have a separate cabinet for each competitive product.

Saving Multiple Pages

  1. Display the Web page you wish to save in your browser.

  2. Start SurfSaver and choose the SAVE button on the toolbar.

The SurfSaver Save dialog appears.

  1. Choose the "Linked Pages" setting.

This setting tells SurfSaver to save the current page and all the pages the current page links to. You can also tell SurfSaver how many levels of pages you wish to save. 1 Level (the default value) saves the current page and all pages the current page links to. 2 Levels would save the current page, all pages linked to from the current page, and all pages linked to from each of these pages.

As you can imagine, you can end up saving a lot of pages. To help narrow the range, there are two additional settings in the save dialog:

The "Save pages within current Web site" setting saves pages in the current domain (for example askSam.com).

The "Save pages within full URL path" setting saves pages which are in or under the current URL path. For example, you could save all pages on the http://www.askSam.com/faq Web site -- all pages in this URL path would be saved, but pages on www.asksam.com root would not be saved.

The SurfSaver Options dialog contains the setting "Maximum Number of pages". This setting lets you set a maximum number of pages that can be saved when you do a multi-level save. The default setting is 1000 pages.

  2. Select the folder and a cabinet where you want to save the pages. All the pages from a single save are placed in the same folder.

You can modify the date, add keywords, and add notes. Any notes, keywords, or date changes are applied to each of the saved pages.

  3. Choose SAVE to begin saving the Web pages.

Quick Save

Click the Quick Save icon on the SurfSaver toolbar. The page will be saved to the Quick Save Destination.

The Quick Save destination is set in the Options dialog box. There are two choices:

  • Last Folder Saved To: When you check this option, your Quick Saves will be directed to the Active Folder, which will be green. The Active Folder will be the last folder you selected for a Save. You can change the Active Folder by right clicking on any folder, and then choosing ACTIVE.
  • Specific Folder. You can set a single folder that will be the destination for all Quick Saves.

Direct Save by right-clicking on the toolbar

You can save a Web page directly by right-clicking directly on it and choosing SURFSAVER SAVE. This is especially helpful when saving pages in limited sites that block normal toolbars and menus, such as many "Print This Page" set ups.

Upgrading to Version 6 from Previous Versions

The Convert Utility

To help you upgrade from previous version of SurfSaver (2.3), SurfSaver includes a Convert Utility, a handy little program that allows you to perform maintenance. When launched, the Convert Utility allows you to convert older askSam files (SurfSaver Cabinet Files) by simply browsing to the file or directory. It also allows you to pack your SurfSaver files, which makes them smaller and more efficient. The Convert Utility can be launched from Start – Programs/All Programs – SurfSaver 6 – Convert Utility.

Installing/Un-installing SurfSaver

To Install

  1. Run the SurfSaverSetup.EXE file you download from the Internet, or (if you receive SurfSaver on CD ROM) place the CD in your drive and run the SETUP program.

Follow the instructions on your screen.

To Remove

  1. Go to Control Panel – Add/Remove Programs.

  2. Choose SurfSaver 6 from the list and click the Remove Button.

Notes:

  • SurfSaver requires Internet Explorer 5.5 or later.
  • Internet Explorer locks the toolbar if it has been modified by the user, or appears to have been modified. This occurs if you have changed the buttons that appear on your Internet Explorer toolbar or in some cases if you are using a third-party toolbar such as Google. In that case, SurfSaver installs, but you must add it to the toolbar manually. Here is the procedure: Click VIEW - TOOLBARS - CUSTOMIZE. ADD SurfSaver from the column on the left. Click CLOSE.
